Systematic treatment of displacements, strains, and electric fields in density-functional perturbation theory

چکیده
The methods of density-functional perturbation theory may be used to calculate various physical response properties of insulating crystals including elastic, dielectric, Born charge, and piezoelectric tensors. These and other important tensors may be defined as second derivatives of an appropriately defined energy functional with respect to atomic-displacement, electric-field, or strain perturbations, or as mixed derivatives with respect to two of these perturbations. The resulting tensor quantities tend to be coupled in complex ways in polar crystals, giving rise to a variety of variant definitions. For example, it is generally necessary to distinguish between elastic tensors defined under different electrostatic boundary conditions, and between dielectric tensors defined under different elastic boundary conditions. Here, we describe an approach for computing all of these various response tensors in a unified and systematic fashion. Applications are presented for two materials, hexagonal ZnO and rhombohedral BaTiO3, at zero temperature.

First-principles perturbative computation of phonon properties of insulators in finite electric fields
We present a perturbative method for calculating phonon properties of an insulator in the presence of a finite electric field. The starting point is a variational total-energy functional with a field-coupling term that represents the effect of the electric field. This total-energy functional is expanded in small atomic displacements within the framework of density-functional perturbation theory...

In this paper, a semi-analytical solution for magneto-thermo-elastic problem in an axisymmetric functionally graded (FG) hollow rotating disk with constant thickness placed in uniform magnetic and thermal fields with heat convection from disk’s surfaces is presented. Solution for stresses and perturbation of magnetic field vector in a thin FG rotating disk is determined using infinitesimal theo...
متن کاملDensity and Polarization Profiles of Dipolar Hard Ellipsoids Confined between Hard Walls: A Density Functional Theory Approach
The density and polarization profiles of the dipolar hard ellipsoids confined between hard walls are studied using the density functional theory (DFT). The Hyper-Netted Chain (HNC) approximation is used to write excess grand potential of the system with respect to the bulk value. The number density is expanded up to zero and first order in polarization to find the results. For the zero order in...
